EXERCISE INFORMATION
The difference between exercise and physical activity is that exercise is more specific to improving your fitness level and toning up the muscles, and is usually more specific to a goal such as training for an event. Exercise can include; walking/jogging/running, cycling, swimming and exercise class/gym.
Physical activity is using energy doing normal daily jobs and helps to keep us strong, healthy and slimmer, therefore the more you do the better. Examples of physical activity include; gardening, housework, walking, shopping, decorating and DIY
Therefore exercise does not mean slogging it out at the gym it can mean doing the garden, house work, DIY, decorating, walking, swimming or any physical activity that you enjoy that fits into your life. This could mean being active for short periods if you have a hectic lifestyle and not much spare time.
There is no difference in the health benefits of exercise and physical activity. Staying active can help to slow down the ageing process by keeping the heart healthy and your muscles toned and strong. This in turn helps to keep your metabolic rate high which not only makes it easier to lose weight but to maintain weight loss as well. Exercise and physical activity can also improve quality of life, reduce fatigue and stress and make daily activities easier to carry out and when combined with healthy eating can help you look and feel fantastic.
Remember the older you get the more important it becomes to stay active to maintain health and strength to enable you carry out your normal daily activities easily and remain independent.
